You may know someone who once owned and used a New Holland baler that made small square bales, but required someone to ride on the back, on a permanent seat, near the knotting mechanism. Some of the earliest balers required two people riding on them. Perhaps the baler was powered by an engine mounted on the baler itself instead of a tractor PTO. If you’ve talked to those people or seen pictures of what that was like, you can better appreciate some of the latest innovations in haymaking and forage harvesting introduced recently.

Those people riding balers decades ago would be shocked to see the New Holland BigBaler 340 High Density large square baler at work. It produces not only big square bales but also bales that are much denser than those produced by similar models.
Likewise, the LB436 baler from Case IH produces high-density, large square bales, packing in much more hay than before. Besides providing one-man haymaking, this baler cuts down on the number of bales produced and number of bales needing storage to deliver the same amount of forage to livestock during the winter.
John Deere takes a major step forward in the hay business, introducing a mower-conditioner model while upgrading all existing models at the same time. Check out the slideshow to see all the exciting new products offered by various companies.

HARVEST HAY EFFICIENTLY: The new Oxbo International 2340 forage merger delivers a consistent windrow with a 5-degree rear slope that evenly distributes hay across the full width of a 40-inch belt. High-capacity pickup and conveyer heads result in steady feeding, even when a farmer is faced with a heavy crop. Two conveyor drive motors deliver reliably high torque and ensure the belt is always pulled, never pushed. The Oxbo heads also pivot in the center, allowing 10 degrees of oscillation, plus or minus, on uneven ground.
COUNT FUEL SAVINGS: Use less horsepower and save on fuel while bagging with the dual-plunger technology in the RamPack by Strobel Manufacturing. The plungers gain inertia from a flywheel, just like a baler. This allows for reduced fuel consumption, decreased unload times and more capacity with silage, haylage, forage, grain and dry hay. Side wagons can dump on a 58-inch-wide vertical hopper and 1.5-inch cleated conveyor.
AUTOMATED CATTLE CHUTE: Processing cattle has come a long way with a range of chute designs, and Dodge Manufacturing is raising the bar with the Brute Stealth ACE, for Autonomous Catch-chute Elite. The system uses sensors to know cattle position, close the head gate, squeeze the animal and get it ready for processing. The operator simply watches the system and hits release when the work is done. Call 402-693-2220 or visit dodgemfg.com.

ANOTHER OPTION FOR HIGH-DENSITY BALES: If you’re after maximum density in high-quality bales, the Case IH LB436 is worth a closer look. The bale chamber is 16% longer and can deliver 50% more plunger force than other Case IH models. A fully automatic bale density system helps achieve higher, more consistent densities and bale weights, even when the size of the windrow or other field conditions change. This baler also features a two-speed gearbox for easy startup and TwinePro knotters with the addition of a loop knot for strength.
